The Ozark Trail was a network of locally maintained roads and highways organized by the Ozark Trails Association, stretching from Arkansas westward, that predated the United States federal highway system. In 1920, members of the association placed concrete signposts along the Ozark Trail in their areas. Located in downtown Wellington, the monument is an important reminder of the numerous private efforts to create a highway system prior to the federal government's assumption of these activities. Other Texas markers survive in Tulia (Swisher County) and Dimmitt (Castro County).
