Canyon: "Pop Culture" at Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

February 2, 2018 (All day) to December 31, 2018 (All day)
Pop Culture at PPHM
Pop Culture at PPHM!

Pop Culture is everywhere, and every generation adds to the definition of popular culture and embraces the varying influences of the past. Beginning Feb. 3, 2018 and continuing throughout the year, PPHM will take a look at the phenomenon by focusing on the 1950s through the 2000s. Throughout four galleries on two floors, PPHM will explore aspects of pop culture and how that affected our daily lives.

A CULTURAL REVOLUTION will take a look at the major historical events of the last sixty years and beyond that have shaped society and influenced popular culture. This exhibition will bring to light how these historical events influenced popular culture and entertainment in ways the general public may not realize.

The visitor’s journey will begin by stepping into the 1950s, with the rise of the Cold War, and touch on topics like the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Step into a 1950s bunker, which presents the opportunity to touch items and supplies that were deemed necessary to survive an attack by the USSR. The exhibition will then move into major historical topics, covering the Civil Rights Movement, the Space Race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Counter Culture, and much more. As visitors look at these issues, they will be able to see how the rise of comic books, like X-Men, Captain America, and Wonder Women, still relevant in television and other entertainment outlets today, were directly influenced by history.

Technology plays a key role in popular culture; it is what connects us to the rest of the world. For better or worse, technology has helped lead the way for the news and entertainment industries, allowing society to see and hear what was happening on a global scale. RCA to Apple is a celebration and look at these technological advances. The exhibit is divided into two categories: sounds and sights. The sounds are songs of these decades be it 8-track to cd, the sights will go from typewriters to computers, from rotary phones to cellular phones.

For A DAY IN THE LIFE, PPHM curators did not want to do a traditional textile exhibit even though it will be in the PPHM Textile gallery. Instead they wanted to give a glimpse of how bedrooms have changed, yet in many ways stayed the same throughout the last sixty years. In this exhibit we wanted to portray adolescent bedrooms and this gave us the opportunity to explore that stage in a person’s life where they are really shaping their future identity. There will be six bedrooms represented. The 1950s, 70s, and 90s will be boys bedrooms while the 1960s, 80s, and 2000s will be girls bedrooms.

“While this exhibit does have some deeper meaning behind it that doesn’t change the fact that it will make you feel like you’re being transported back in time and nostalgia plays a big role in this. We want to give visitors the opportunity to revisit a past life or jump into a new one and share that experience with their friends and family,” said Samantha Biffle, co-curator of this exhibition.

The Alexander Gallery of PPHM will be transformed like never before and will take you back to the good old days. Relive your favorite movie moments in the PPHM Theater. Visitors will almost be able to smell the popcorn as they sit down at the “theater” and watch famous movie clips, trailers, quotes and unforgettable moments roll across the screen.
