Located in a restored historic mansion in downtown Colorado City, the Heart of West Texas Museum tells the story of the “Mother City of West Texas.” Key attractions include an exhibit on the Lake Champion mammoth skeleton discovered near Colorado City in 2001, and a replica of the prehistoric bison antiquus skeleton found on Lone Wolf Creek.

Other exhibits include farm and ranch heritage; cowboy heritage displays and a branding wall; a Missouri & Pacific caboose; and the Kiowa Chief Lone Wolf exhibit. In the war exhibits, there is a particularly memorable set of telegrams and letters from federal and military officials to the family of a local soldier killed in France in WWII, including correspondence from FDR and Secretary of War Henry Stimson.
