The Ozark Trail was a network of locally maintained roads and highways organized by the Ozark Trails Association that predated the United States federal highway system. In 1920, Texas county members of the association placed concrete signposts along the Ozark Trail in their area. Located in Tulia's Downtown area between Maxwell and Broadway Avenues, the monument is an important reminder of the numerous private efforts to create a highway system prior to the federal government's assumption of these activities after World War II.
